Don't Forget about the August 9th Perch Derby.
Purchase August 9th 2008 Perch Derby Ticket

July 22
Fishing On the South Jetty  is good for Rockfish, Green ling and Kelp ling. A good way is to find a fairly deep hole that you can find a rock above to sit on. Jig in the hole below you with bait or artificial. There is a light near the middle of the jetty. You should be able to find a good spot before that. Fish on the bay side of the jetty.

Also try the bay side of the seawall that seperates the bay from the marina near the end of Float 20. You will need to fish from the top of the wall. The biggest problem is hoisting yiur catch so stout line is in order.

If you need a Fishing licence.
We have the Fish and wildlife licence Machine at Angler Charters. We can help you with any kind of Fishing or Hunting licence that you might need.
We are open from 10 am to 5 pm.

Angler Charters also has bait and gear for crabbing and fishing.

Jetty Fishing and along the rocks around Westport
was good the first two weeks of May. Maybe not as fast as some other years due to the low water temperature this spring but the fish are of nice size. Patience is the key. The temperature is starting to rise and the bites are closer together. The Grays Harbor buoy report can be accessed from the index on the front page. The information is updated every 30 minutes. It shows water temperature, swell information and other data.

Large rockfish and some ling are being caught from the South Jetty and rock groins around the marina. Fishing is good when the ocean is calm enough to be safe. Be careful on the rocks and beware of large waves.
Fish on the bay side. Natural bait and plastics are the best.
The most fish are being caught on Plastic lures fished close to the rocks. Cast like you are fishing for freshwater bass but near the bottom. If you don't bang into the rocks some you likely not in quite the right spot.

The 9 1/2 lb Ling to the left was caught on the 8th of April by Allen Glover of Westport with a Storm Plastic.

Beach fishing
Perch fishing has been good this spring when the ocean is calm enough. Many fish have been over 2 pounds and the best success has been between Grayland and North Cove.
Fishing has improved on the north end of the beach with good results reported just south of the South Jetty to Ocean Avenue. There is a state day park at the jetty and parking near the end of Ocean Ave. Try areas of deeper water.
Fishing is best when the surf conditions are calm. When the waves are breaking far off of the beach the fish are scattered and harder to find. If you want to plan a trip see wave height prediction link below. Click on NE Pacific in the MERCATOR section of the chart. Next click the arrow in the forecast frame and select how many hours ahead, then click display. This prediction is for up to 7 days and is fairly accurate. Also see Grays Harbor Buoy link. This buoy is located about 6 miles west and gives current wave height, water temperature and other information. It is updated every 30 minutes. Click triangles on the left side to see graph for past 5 days.

Rock and Jetty Fishing

Fishing for rock fish and perch can be done just over the marina breakwater wall. This can be fished from the fisherman's boardwalk with variety of rock fish being caught. Fish are normally about 1 1/2 pounds with an occasional rock fish up to 5 pounds. Green ling, Kelp ling and Lingcod are also a possibility. Herring, anchovies, shrimp and clam necks are good bait. Also plastic grubs work well. Fish for rockfish near the rocks at the base of the wall and perch are out away from the wall under the waves. Use a light color for bright days and darker ones on overcast days. The most difficult part of this area is hoisting up your catch. A dip net with a long handle is a big help. Fish in a manner similar to bass fishing for rock fish. The South jetty has been productive and best either side of the Fog horn mounted about half way out. Also don't over look the rock walls and groins west of the marina. Good fishing! Be safe.
